How a blog helps optimise your website

Google is constantly changing its algorithms and in order that your website remains visible you need to keep on top of the latest stringent criteria. That can be daunting, but a blog is an easy and effective starting point.

How does having a blog help with SEO?

Search Engine Optimisation Strategies

Over the years we have researched strategies for optimising websites and made it our business to keep on top of all the changes in direction that Google have taken making sure our clients rank highly in the search engine listings. A lot of the work involved comes down to making sure your website is built in a specific way and ensuring it is correctly registered and follows all of Google's guidelines.

Most people know by now that good quality content is crucial. The world of digital marketing is always banging on about this. It’s because the search engines pick up key words and phrases from your copy, straplines, image titles and behind the scenes meta data but they also recognise if you are just sticking words in and they notice if a page or blog attracts interest. Gone are the days when you can repeat key words without saying much.

Videos and Blogs

As well as looking at the design and components of your specific website Google look to see whether the content is regularly updated and if it is linked to active social media. Videos hosted by YouTube, shares on social media and interaction on blog posts all count highly towards your Google ranking. It’s likely that the main pages of your website remain unchanged for long periods so a weekly or even monthly blog post which registers with Google as a new page goes a long way. Google really does value fresh content and your site traffic will increase significantly.

But having a blog is more than a tool for optimising your site, it’s a chance to grow your brand identity, show how you interact with the outside world, update browsers on your company news and showcase new products or services. It can also provide a base for a regular e-newsletter to link to, pulling existing customers back to your website.

How to format a blog

Blogs need to be at least 300 words to help with SEO and a capture a reader’s interest straight away. They should not be dense text, but include plenty of spacing, straplines and titles. Format your blog to make it visually appealing and add images.

Images should be titled with terms that might be used when searching for information that is answered on your blog. The alt-text is meant to describe what’s in the image for those who don’t or aren’t able to see images on their computer screens. For this reason, your alt-text must be carefully crafted to serve two purposes: SEO and information.

Most people read blogs to learn how to do something, keep up to date with something they are following the progress or for entertainment. Which category does your fall into?
